NYCC’s Marvel/Netflix panel was packed with new info regarding their so-far-excellent lineup of mature superhero shows. In attendance were Jeph Loeb, Charlie Cox (Daredevil), Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones), Mike Colter (Luke Cage), “Daredevil” showrunners Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez, and Marvel CCO Joe Quesada, as well as newcomers Elodie Yung and Jon Bernthal, who star in Daredevil’s second season as Elektra and The Punisher respectively.

CBR reported on the Q&A session. Yung said that playing Elektra felt “intense” and added, “I’m a black belt of karate,” said Yung. “I did Muy Thai, I booked the job because Loeb asked if I was really a martial artist and basically I can kick your ass. And I got the job.”

Bernthal said he took playing vigilante Frank Castle seriously. “Look, I know how important this character is to you guys, I know that. I know how important Punisher is to law enforcement and the military, I look at this as a huge honor and responsibility, I give you my absolute word that I will give everything I have.”

Cox spoke about the challenges in playing a blind man when you yourself are used to sight. “It’s challenging for all of us because I can’t look them in the eye and they can’t look me in the eye. I was really blessed because I was invited to the American Foundation of the Blind and I was given an award; that’s been so rewarding. It’s been a blessing I never expected. It’s one of the things i love about Daredevil. He’s one of the few superheroes that has a disability.”

Not only was a lot of new information dumped about both shows, the entire first episode of Jessica Jones was screened for the audience. The website io9 was there and reported their impressions — which were VERY favorable. They report that the flavor of the show is undeniably noir from the first second, but it strikes the exact tone of noir without going over the top, playing to cliches, or adding “dark for the sake of dark.”

They remark that Kilgrave feels like a truly imposing villain because you more often see the results of his actions and the effect he has on people rather than the moments where he actually does something. It’s left more to your imagination, and the fact that Jessica, normally a very tough woman, has been left shaken and traumatized by her one run-in with him.

Both seasons sound ace, and we can’t wait for Netflix to dump ’em. Jessica Jones comes next month; the second season of Daredevil will be released sometime in 2016.
