The first season of Marvel’s Jessica Jones premiered late last year and I think we can all agree, reserving any hyperbole, that it was one of the best things created by human hands since the Sistene Chapel. The characters were likeable with bold personalities, the villain was legitimately terrifying, the humor was hilarious, the tense stuff was nail-biting — it was as close to perfection as a superhero show can get, even if it barely fit under that category. Everyone assumed we would hear about a second season within days.
Then an interview with showrunner Melissa Rosenberg came out where it was stated Jessica Jones probably could not get a Season 2 until The Defenders, the Avengers-type show far off in Netflix’s future, appeared. This was a show where characters who had yet to get their own shows would team up, so in order to get to that point, we would have to wait past Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Daredevil’s second season and this new Punisher series. Krysten Ritter would be OLD by then!
Jessica Jones was so good that its existence instantly resolved all conflicts in the Middle East, broke up ISIS, cured every form of cancer, and made Donald Trump spontaneously combust. In order for this peace to continue, a second season had to happen soon — but that was up to Netflix. Big outlets like the New York Post pleaded with the streaming giant to reconsider.
Fortunately, common sense prevailed this morning as Netflix formally announced Jessica Jones’ renewal. An additional 13 episodes have been commissioned, with a launch date yet to be determined.
Exactly how Netflix plans to fit all these shows into their schedule is the big question. Originally they stated there would be only two Marvel shows per year (in 2016 we get Daredevil Season 2 and Luke Cage) but expanding that timeline to three or four per year seems the logical step.
